Restaurateur Artie Cutler crafted Carmine's with a singular vision; bringing his guests abundant portions and making any meal feel like an Italian American wedding feast. My son wanted to come here for his birthday. Of course you get a lot of food. The calamari could have been fried harder with less grease on the plate.

What a fun experience to add to our dining experiences on our weeklong holiday vacation in DC. Probably more enjoyable with a large group as this is served family-dining style. (An order of garlic bread is like a whole loaf…but the best garlic bread I’ve ever been served!). Can highly recommend for quality and quantity and ambience. (Although mid, not deafening)

We got off to a difficult start as the hostess forgot about us. We arrived 5 minutes early for our reservation. After 25 minutes we asked again and she said they were almost ready. No apology. Table after table had walked in and were seated. It left a bad taste for us. I did not want to take it out on our server. Our server was nice and did a good job. The food was good. I have a problem with the portions of everything. It’s fine to serve “family style,” however, there should be some way to accommodate smaller parties. We were a party of 2, and everything we ordered would feed easily 6-8 people. Half sizes should be offered. We only ordered 1 entree but it will still be another 2-3 meals for us. We were able to bring it home; but in a tourist city, most people wouldn’t be able to if they’re staying in a hotel. We probably won’t be back because we just can’t eat that much food.

Food and service were great. One thing I thought a wee mortifying was when we stood before the host stand to check in. There were five staff members there. Five. One was looking at a monitor, one was on a two-way communicator, one was on the phone, one was shuffling menus, one was just standing there. Not one of them looked at us for about three minutes. (After one minute, my wife started keeping time). At the three minute mark, the woman looking at the monitor looked up at me and smiled and then looked away. No greeting, no “we’ll be right with you,” nothing. About thirty seconds later, the woman in a jacket on the phone finally asked if we needed help. I said yes, we have 530 reservations. She asked my name, I gave it, she said it would be a few minutes. I was tempted to ask what the corporate policy was on the importance of greeting a customer in a reasonably timely manner. But I decided to save my experience for this platform.

Best Caesar salad I’ve ever had in my life. I eat Caesar salad almost every day (wraps, side salads, etc.) and this blew me out of the water. Penne allá vodka was incredible. Did not know about the portion sizes but still a fantastic experience.
