Big Esso is an all-day bar and kitchen located on the land of the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung peoples. We are beyond proud to be bringing Indigenous food and culture back to the banks of Birrarung (Yarra). This River was once an eel breeding ground; where shark, dolphin and stingrays could be found. This place was a main source of food, hunting, cooking, and ceremony. By sharing food in this place, we hope to bring these stories back to life. 'Big Esso' is an expression in the Torres Strait. It’s a slang term that means ‘the biggest thank you.’ This is what you say when you really want to express your gratitude. When combined, ‘Mabu Mabu & Big Esso’ is what you would say before kicking-off a celebration like no other.

Vatutto is a family run restaurant, Owners Paul and Myrto Recinella moved from their 16 year Institution at Zios East Melbourne to the Ivanhoe location in 2015. A full renovation was completed recently creating a modern yetelegant atmosphere. Vatutto translates from Italian to ‘Everything goes’ the menu here has a diverse flavour selection from all corners of the earth. Produce here is sourced from premium suppliers, and we use sustainable seafood from Australian or New Zealand waters, Wagyu beef from Gippsland, organic eggs, fruit and vegetables, and quality imported cheese, dairy products and flour. Bread is baked daily and all desserts, pastries and ice cream are all made on the premises using quality ingredients.

We've made a point of sourcing ingredients from some of the best suppliers in the state, making sure that our menu reflects what's in season. I had a memorable evening meal here. After stupidly eating a big lunch, I went for some lighter options. The oysters with mango and jalapeno were a gorgeous start, and the terrine was particularly good. Very respectful, polite service, friendly, and attentive without me feeling at all bothered. Nice decor and interesting art on the walls. I hadn't eaten Sturia Oscietra caviar before, but this was a special ocassion, so I splashed out. And I wasn't disapppointed. It was sensational - the kind of thing that makes you close your eyes and groan with each mouthful. The smoked sour cream was a lovely addition, though I went lightly with it to best enjoy the amazing melt-in-the-mouth feeling and complex flavour of the caviar. Without the aditional cost of the caviar, the prices were quite reasonable considering the quality of the food and service. I only wish I'd had enough appetite left for desert. Can't wait to return and try some of the heavier dishes.
