Tangawizi restaurant in London’s East Twickenham, close to Richmond Bridge, earned the well-heeled locals’ devotion right from the off. The chef is ‘trained by and strongly recommended by Vineet Bhatia’ and that’s saying quite a lot. The dining room is very smart, mood-enhancingly lit in saffron and blackberry with details of beautiful sari fabric inlaid in the tables. Dishes are authentic North Indian, but cutting-edge and contemporary, the way we Londoners like them: the freshest of ingredients, little oil, sparkling flavours. Try the mixed platter of starters to share to really browse the possibilities, then choose something like spicy marinated red snapper in tempura batter served with cheddar and Parmesan risotto, with one of the lovely dahls on the side. The traditionally-clad waitstaff are very attentive and the whole experience a winner.

Executive Chef Mr Alamin l-b-n Aftab was headhunted by Joy’s Managing Director and previously worked for the prestigious Taj Hotel Group and some of the UK’s top Indian restaurants. His menu includes familiar favourites like chicken jalfrezi and lamb rogan josh, alongside some house specialties like Nali Gosth (lamb shank marinated with spices, onion and tomato) and chicken green masala – a Goan curry made with fresh coriander, mint and coconut milk. Always a pleasure eating at Roots, the service is exemplary and the curry’s are beautifully prepared and not the generic brown sauce that you get given at other Indian restaurants in our area…a must for curry lovers.

We are regular visitors and are never dissappointed. The food is consistently good and the prices reasonable. Ali and his colleagues are always welcoming and friendly and very attentive. The resuatuant was busy when we last visited but our food was delivered quickly and with the same consistent quality. We regularly try different dishes and are never dissappointed - though the Harimurch chicken was maybe a dish too far ! VERY hot, although it does state this on the menu. I heartilly recommend this restaurant.
