The tradition started in early 1800’s with the Duchess of Bedford having that “sinking feeling” in the afternoon as it was normal for only 2 meals a day. The Duchess started the tradition of a pot of tea and a light bites which she later went on to invite friends too attend at Woburn Abbey.
