Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

We are happy to arrange for special events or private parties in any of our three rooms at the Hayes Street Grill. The largest dining area can host parties up to 75 seated and 90 standing; the bar room can host 35 seated and 50 standing; lastly, our private alcove can host 25 seated and 30 standing.

Yummmmm this place is a classic. Had a nice quiet lunch with 3 other friends. Petrale sole, fried oysters, hamburger and salmon entree. Every dish was perfectly cooked and delicious. Server was attentive and atmosphere was delightful.

The quality of the food is top notch! We had the Winter salad and calamari salad, both delicious. Fried oysters, skate, scallops and black cod also delicious. Attentive and prompt service. The only drawback was noise when the restaurant became full… it’s great to have a lively atmosphere but really spoils the experience when you can’t hear the people you are dining with. Go really early before the hordes arrive, or maybe later after they have all left for various theater dates.

First time dining here. We had tickets to The Nutcracker and wanted to eat close by. The place was packed and the hostess mentioned that the wait staff is extremely busy. We were sat, didn't have to wait long before our server took our order. Our food and drinks were brought to us pretty fast! Everything we ordered was incredible, especially the calamari salad. Our server was great! Didn't seem frazzled although she had a good number of tables to get to and gave us plenty of attention. Truly, a wonderful experience! We'll be back.

Service is usually punctual and attentive. Tonight we sat for over 10 minutes and got no acknowledgement from anyone except our water person. We were wondering who was serving us. Patrons at another table near us were seated after us and were served before us. When we finally got served, the food and drinks went okay. Never experienced this quality of service before, never had her before; perhaps she had a bad day.

This restaurant is an old time favorite of ours for fresh seafood. The fish is quickly cooked and presented to you immediately. I don’t see food sitting around under heat lamps here. There’s a variety of fresh seafood available but unfortunately no sand dabs for us this time. We did enjoy the pan-fried oysters, the house paella with seafood, the brussel sprouts and the Acme sourdough bread. The carrot cake is a delicious dessert. Waiter service is quick and efficient.
