Raul Molina arrived in Houston from his hometown of Laredo, Mexico in the late 1920s. Like many of his contemporaries, he was searching for a better life and found work in a local restaurant as a busboy, dishwasher and counterman. In 1941, Raul and wife Mary opened their first Mexican restaurant, the Old Monterrey, located in Houston at 1919 W. Gray. At the time there were only four or five Mexican restaurants in the City of Houston. Today, Raul Molina is considered a pioneer in Tex-Mex cuisine and is best known as the patriarch of a food family. Now, more than seven decades later, Molina’s Cantina is recognized as the oldest and one of the best locally owned and operated Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston. The plains of Southern Brazil are filled with grazing cattle enjoying the vast pastures. These cattle are the source for the famous and centuries old Brazilian “Churrasco” barbecues. It was at these gatherings where Brazilian cowboys or “gauchos” would prepare large pieces of meat and slowly cook them over open flame pits. Our traditional gaucho chefs still follow these traditions to preserve the flavors of each cut of meat. We feature unlimited tableside service of different cuts of beef, pork, lamb, and chicken. We also feature a gourmet salad bar, and various traditional side dishes to complement the meats. You can control your service with a small green and red-sided card. The green side tells the gaucho chefs to bring out skewers of sizzling meats to the table while the red signals a stopping point. To re-start service, simply display the green side again.
