We invite you to celebrate refined Thai cuisine and an invigorating dining experience in the heart of Charleston, Mt Pleasant and Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC.

Basil is the realization of the lifelong dream of Henry and Chai Eang, brothers who immigrated to the United States from turbulent 1970s Cambodia. From speaking not a word of English, to creating award-winning dining experiences throughout the Carolinas, the duo has married hard work with passion to bring authentic Thai cuisine to their new home.

Since opening the first Basil in Charleston to rave reviews, several trendy locations have followed over the last dozen years. Basil’s infectious atmosphere centers around a dynamic kitchen as the sound of heat to metal, blade to board and liquid to flame resonate throughout the restaurant. Each space stylishly appointed to reflect the culture and energy of the noteworthy Southern cities they inhabit.

                                                                                    We arrived for our reservation just as the restaurant was opening for dinner and the staff was ready to go. Two of us shared two appetizers, fresh basil rolls and nam sod with chicken, plus an order of pad kee mow. The amount of food was perfect, enough to leave us satisfied but not feeling heavy. We very much enjoyed the rolls and the noodles and would absolutely order them again. We both found the nam sod less flavorful than expected but fully acknowledge that neither of us knew what to expect from the dish. Service was friendly, attentive and timely, despite the restaurant being short a food runner. I'm definitely adding Basil to my short list of pre-theater dinner favorites.

                                                                                    So I took my partner and I had to basil last night on Valentine’s Day and to say this was probably my worst experience eating in Charlotte so far moving here. Our server was incredibly unattended and it would take 20 minutes just to find her every time and after multiple times of having the manager, bring us everything because she didn’t come Check on us once the entire time other than to bring my check I will not be coming back again. To top it all off when we talk to the manager in the respectful manner he then told us that it’s not the restaurants fault when they were overbooked, even though there were multiple empty tables around us and people complaining of the exact same thing that had the same server as we did last night. The sad thing is we literally had to ask three people just to get our drinks from the bar after our server told us that the bar was backed up even though we were looking at our drinks sitting there for over 15 minutes with her, just sitting on her phone. The manager even told her to bring us a round of cough drink, which we appreciated but never received because she never put the order in. The only redeeming quality is the food so definitely try it for takeout, but I would not recommend ever eating in the restaurant as there were multiple people with the same issues as we had, and the manager was very unprofessional with yelling and screaming, and how he was acting as well. I completely understand. It’s a holiday, but I have some respect for your business..

                                                                                    I need to start by saying I do not write reviews for restaurants. I fully believe that if I have a bad experience, then that is mine and I don’t want to impose on others as they could have an entirely different experience than I. However, I feel very compelled to write this review. This place really struggled with Valentine’s Day dinner service. While our food was good and our server did her best, the overall vibe of the place was so horrendous. People around us at different tables all seemed to have had bad experiences, from forgotten food, to wrong food, to checks taking a long time to come out, to the manager giving major attitude. Multiple times the manager was yelling at his wait staff and also the kitchen staff. I know tensions are high on a night like Valentine’s Day, but there has to be a better way to handle these issues. It really seemed like the manager on duty was so incredibly high-stressed and he let it show big time. It just felt so unprofessional. Basil Thai needs to have a come to jesus moment with how things are run. Work on your communication skills. Another note - it seemed like hardly any tables were tended to. I noticed that many tables went 15-20+ minutes without anyone checking on them, getting refills, etc. It just felt like many tables were in limbo. Good food does not make up for the overall bad vibe of this place. It’s not normal to look around a restaurant and see wait staff visibly upset, the manager screaming, and most patrons looking extremely unhappy.
