An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

The menu was fun and the foood was a plus with delicious deviled eggs and crab rolls. The trout was exceptional in the state.tartar was fabulous It was a much too loud for me I will try the upstairs next time cause the food is worth it

First we had a wonderful table upstairs. The service was excellent and our server, Scott, was wonderful and attentive. We enjoyed the food: my husband loved the bones marrow (unusual dish but quite good), I liked the crab rolls and the beef short rib. My husband was not thrilled with the crab pasta, too spicy killing the taste of crab. He was offered the same plate without the chili and when we paid, that dish was deducted! Deserts were just okay. Overall a good experience. Just wish people were not so loud!

Great music and vibes. Food was also very good; smaller portions as expected of fine dining in San Francisco

Bix was amazing. We spent 12 days between Napa, st Helena, Heildsburg, and San Francisco. Bix may have been top on the list of our dining experiences. We ate at many Michelin Star and Grand award winning restaurants throughout our stay and feel Bix could be our best experience. You guys blew The French Laundry out of the water...you really did!! Looking forward to making it back to San Fran so we can experience Bix again.

I was born in San Francisco and have been going to BIX for over 30 years. I even ate lunch at the place when my offices were in the Pyramid at least 5 times per month. However, I moved away about 10 years ago and went to the Theartre last night. I booked BIX before the show, and it was happening as always. The room is so spectacular (art deco style) with a Jazz vibe. Bix has survived all the ups and downs of the City because it is a one-of-a-kind place hidden down an alley.

Great old school, classy SF spot. Decor is beautiful, service was super. We ate at the bar and it was delicious dinner. We had the duck dish - duck two ways and it was really good. Even the sauteed spinach was good, not too overdone. Nice selection of wines.

Just a terrific evening. Mix a warm greeting with good jazz, classic cocktails, some 1930’s ambiance, and good food and you can’t miss! It was a little loud as folks tried to talk over the music rather than below it, but we managed good conversation despite that and the jazz led by the Bix music director really added to the evening. Looking forward to returning!!

This is a great old standby in a renovated building in the most charming part of San Francisco. Food and service are great, plus live jazz playing in the background. A large crowd of regulars were in attendance, even on a Tuesday night.
