Set in Kansas City’s historic City Market, Brown and Loe Restaurant’s inviting atmosphere is a blend of “big city” bistro with the welcoming casual flavor of a neighborhood favorite. Housed in a former Merchant’s Bank constructed in 1920, the restaurant honors the architectural details of the two-story building which features a façade of plate glass and verde marble floors and walls.
In the 1940’s, Brown and Loe was originally a produce broker with offices on the second floor of the Merchant’s Bank building. The new Brown and Loe Restaurant celebrates the techniques of curing, pickling and smoking meats, beautifully interpreted into marvelous American comfort cuisine. This is a true local venue, evidenced by the restaurant’s allegiance to the resident farmers and food artisans who supply most of the restaurant’s fresh ingredients.
Brown and Loe Restaurant is the second dining concept introduced by Harry Murphy, owner of the City Market’s popular Harry’s Country Club.

    The food is always well prepared and delivered to the table steaming hot when it is supposed to be steaming hot. The servers are kind, knowledgeable and efficient. The vibe is lively and laid back, but can get a little noisy at peak times since the tables are close together. There is a small back room that can seat a group of perhaps 8-10 and provides nice privacy. The patio has heat lamps and is comfortable through most of 3 seasons. Definitely an urban atmosphere with a sort of old school, vintage feel but with absolutely current food choices.

    Our first visit, and we’ll be back! Food was incredible, the Spaghetti Squash dish and Meatloaf dishes were highly recommended and it was worth it! Next time we’ll try dessert too. Service was great, and we loved the environment.

    Having made reservations prior, we were initially led to a mediocre table. The fairly young hostess claimed there was no other table available when I asked, although the restaurant was only about half full. I get it. However, before we could sit down, we were approached by, I suppose, the manager who had observed the interaction from the door and offered a different table which gave more privacy and a more cozy dining experience. It totally improved and saved our dining experience. Thanks!

    The ham and pear sandwich was excellent, and I ordered the grilled sweet potatoes as a side. Great choice! My husband had the salmon and very much enjoyed it. The coconut tart had a crust that was a bit too thick, but the filling was wonderful! Service and drinks were superb.

    We had left a note saying that we were coming in to celebrate our wedding anniversary and requested a cozy table. Our service felt like we were an afterthought as our server seemed distracted by larger parties in his section. Our food was okay. The medium-cooked top sirloin was chewy and not very flavorful and we almost forgot it was supposed to come with poached crab meat because there was so little of it, but at a price point of $36 maybe paid for what we got. The key lime tart was nice and my husband enjoyed the oysters. The whole experience was meh and didn't leave us wanting to come back anytime soon. As an additional note, no one said anything about our special occasion, which I found unusual for a place that takes notes and special requests with their reservations.

    Very good food! Server was a little too busy and had some trouble bringing us the correct check. After three tries, success!!
