On May 13, 1931, Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's Bar in Venice. Over the years, Harry's Bar has become the place where writers, painters, artists, aristocrats, kings, and queens would meet. Among them were: Barbara Hutton, Katherine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Giancarlo Menotti, Peggy Guggenheim, Orson Welles, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joe DiMaggio, Truman Capote, and Ernest Hemingway. The keys to the success of this small bar were: service, freedom, and lack of imposition.

Throughout its 93-year history, Harry's Bar has witnessed the 20th century in Venice. Its importance was also recognized by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, which declared it a national reference point in 2001. No other public place in Italy had received the same award in the same century.

    The downstairs bar was packed so we were shown to our table upstairs a little early for a drink. We ordered 2 martinis and they were served in small, frozen glasses, almost like a shot glass. That was different but they were ice-cold! Dinner was delicious! We had the baby artichokes, and tagliatelle with ragu. Couldn’t resist the pear dessert.

    The food was very good and the service provided was excellent. However, the pub was extremely busy and, in general, the noise level was almost unbearable.

    Such a great recommendation and so glad I went. It is pricey but as a Christmas treat it was worth every penny!! The staff were so friendly, the food was heavenly and general feel was so welcoming.

    The service is outstanding. The atmosphere is wonderful (we were on the top floor, overlooking the sea). The Piemontese canneloni were excellent (light thin pasta perfectly cooked, the sauce subtly tangy balancing the meat filling), as was the John Dory with radicchio and white rice, all cooked just right and complementing each other; the roasted duck was very good, the bird's flavor subtle, but the sauce perhaps lacked a bit of character, and the few vegetables were somewhat lost in it (some white rice left over from the fish helped soak it and made the dish better; the roasted duck was not crispy at all, maybe on account of the sauce covering it); the zabaglione was delicious and the mille feuille too, crispy and the chantilly not too sweet. The welcome bread, a very light butter bun, is memorable, and the rest of the bread basket, combined with the strong, nutty, well-balanced house olive oil, a perfect companion during the meal. Be prepared for an expensive meal in this Venetian landmark that lives up to its history and reputation.
