Contrary to popular belief, JJ's Restaurant is not named for popular owner Jimmy Frantzé. In 1985, Jimmy purchased JJ Malane's from his former business partner and the saloon's namesake. Malane's went away, but JJ's remained, and a West Plaza fine dining icon was born. Jimmy invested his enthusiasm and passion for exceptional contemporary American food, steaks and wine to build one of the finest restaurants in Kansas City just a block west of the Country Club Plaza. He helped create an environment that attracted and kept one of the most professional staffs in the region. He inspires so much loyalty that when the new JJ's reopened 18 months after a 2013 fateful fire, almost all of his staff re-joined him.

Cost is $135 per person. $10 will be collected when you make your reservation, and $125 plus tax and gratuity will be paid at the restaurant.

                  Our first visit to J J’s as we live in St. Louis. Attractive interior, welcoming atmosphere, terrific food, 5-star service from Dana, helpful staff, noteworthy menu and wine list. Our best ever dining experience in Kansas City!

                  Was celebrating my birthday with my wife. Ordered the small filet rare and expensive wine. What I got was not a filet and was medium well. They did bring me another steak, it was good but took over 10 minutes to get. Basically my wife and I ate separately! Not a good experience and no compensation was offered even though our server thought there would be. Very disappointing.

                  Tom, you got a filet both times, and a new steak does take a minute to cook. I can tell you for sure that the first one wasn't good. It came out about medium and was definitely not up to our standards. That happens sometimes. Science has yet to make a cow that produces a perfect, uniform steak every time. Your new steak arrived quickly. Your wife was still eating when I stopped to check on you a couple minutes after your new steak arrived. I stopped by your table to check in three times, and not once did you mention being unsatisfied. If you had simply mentioned then and there that you weren't happy, I'd have helped.

                  The food was great. Best bread I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The only issue was our waiter Rick was not very attentive. It seemed like we were always waiting on him longer than a normal time. Also our steaks were undercooked and he took them back and it was 20 minutes before they were brought back to us so my loaded baked potatoes were cold. My husband ordered no asparagus and his came back with asparagus and he picked it up with his fork and told Rick that he did not want asparagus and Rick snatched the asparagus from his plate and threw it in the bread basket and walked off. It was pretty aggressive and we were put off by the service that night.

                  My husband wanted somewhere new, usually we stay north of the river, but I grew up south so JJs is familiar to me. It didn’t disappoint. First, our server was amazing. He was top notch. He said he hadn’t been there long and to please excuse him as he was still new, you couldn’t tell 10/10 on his service. The crab cakes were phenomenal. We both had surf and turf. The steaks were tender and cooked perfectly. The lobster was seasoned and tender. Overall, we will be back in the future.
