Karkalla reflects the essence we believe to be truly Australian- coastal, sun kissed, relaxed, and most importantly generous.

We are known and loved for our relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, use of native indigenous ingredients and love of locally sourced seasonal produce.

Our signature dishes include Native Green Curry, Sashimi with Native Nam Jim and Kangaroo Curry Pie.

Jingiwallah - hello and welcome locals, travellers, families, and friends alike. At Karkalla we keep half of our tables for walk-ins so please stop by if you can not get a booking.

We respectfully acknowledge the past and present traditional owners of the land of the Indigenous people, the traditional custodians of this land, and respect their culture and identity which has been interwoven with the land and sea for generations.

Een aanrader om te eten. (Het meest smakelijke wat wij de afgelopen 2.5 week aan de oostkust hebben gegeten.)

If you get a chance to eat here while it’s still open. Take it! The service was exceptional, the food was out of this world. I’m so privileged to have had this experience.

We did love the food but unfortunately too noisy for us. We go usually to eat out in town to this places with friends and we like to talk. If we go alone we go to more casual places like, let’s say Japanese kitchen, for a quick bite. But with friends is nice to have a more fine and long dining experience as it means most of the times we are catching up, but as I mentioned, it was so difficult to talk. We were not so fortunate because our table was the closest to the speaker. Food was wonderful, and the staff were lovely, a pity about the noise.

Fantastic experience! Food, drinks, service and location at Karkalla are delightful. Things that cannot be missed: prawns, scallops, Bunya nut bread and green curry. This first nation restaurant is unique, it invited me to connect with local nature and Bundjalung culture. Flavours I'd never had before, natives I didn't know that existed, stories about Bundjalung traditions that opened my senses. I'll definitely be back. Thank you Karkalla!

We visited the place for the first time while on holidays in Byron- the food was super fresh, garnished with native herbs and flowers which made it more interesting and very palatable. Its on a pricey side but at least you get what you paid for! Native Margarita was absolutely delicious! We tried multiple small seafood dishes plus a main with a couple of drinks- the bill amounted to 220 dollars for 2. Highly recommended if you are a bit of a foodie.

Amazing tastes showcasing the diversity of Australian native food in a creative and top-notch dining experience. From the moment we stepped into Kirkala, we were greeted with warm hospitality and an inviting atmosphere. The menu is a delightful exploration of native Australian ingredients, expertly crafted into dishes that are both innovative and delicious. Each bite was a revelation, with flavors that danced on the palate and showcased the richness of our local cuisine. Standout dishes included the king fish sushimi and the beetle nut leaf mushroom wrap, both expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. The presentation of each dish was a work of art, highlighting the chef's attention to detail and commitment to excellence. The service was warm and friendly, with attentive staff who were knowledgeable about the menu and happy to offer recommendations. Overall, Kirkala is a gem of a restaurant that celebrates the best of Australian cuisine in a truly memorable dining experience.
