Mathilde French Bistro is a quintessential French Bistro in the SOMA area of San Francisco. A cozy main dinning room and romantic patio room which is covered and heated, allowing year round dining.
The cuisine is traditional bistro faire, with its voted best in town French onion soup, baked escargots and duck confit. Soon as you set foot at Mathilde, you will feel like you are back in Paris.
Mathilde Bistro is also the sister restaurant of L'ardoise Bistro.

Service was great. A nice surprise nestled in the large structures in SOMA. Onion soup is a must order, and can be a meal in itself. Wine choices were extensive and reasonably priced.

I love this place, but last night after talking with our hostess, she told us that Mathilde will close on December 31. But they will be going to their sister restaurant, L'Ardoise, which is in our neighborhood. But I will miss Mathilde, for sure. But I got to have the bone marrow and cassoulet, so our visit was nonetheless memorable.

I've gone here at least yearly for the past 20 years. Food is always delicious, with great French sauces. I'll be sad when they close but I'll try their other restaurant.

We loved our experience at the restaurant. We were excited to go there, as we miss Fringale and found the chef! I had the special beef bourguignon en croute and the goat cheese salad - both excellent. My husband had the onion soup and hanger steak and was also very pleased with them. We will definitely return when we are in SF again!

The host was attentive to my reservation note about wanting a quiet spot to celebrate a birthday and placed us at a 4-top for two of us, no immediate neighboring tables, and a view of the food coming out of the kitchen. Very attentive and considerate. The specials were clearly stated, the food was cooked to perfection, the apps, mains, and desserts were all plated and delivered with care and attention, and everything was delicious. The birthday celebrant's dessert was delivered quietly with a candle, and no pomp and circumstance. Perfect. $200 for two of us, and that includes drinks. Well worth it. I would absolutely return. A wonderful experience.

Always a delight to have dinner at Mathilde's French Bistrot. My French-Canadian family was impressed and Lena, the owner and restaurateur, was warm and welcoming. The steak frites was cooked just right, and my parents enjoyed their Halibut and Duck confit. The risotto exploded with flavor when my wife shared a taste with me. The ambience in either the patio or main dining room is pleasant, roomy enough to give a sense of privacy to each table/party, and we could talk to each other without having to raise our voices since the playlist of French chansons acted as pleasant accompaniment rather than loud headliner. I highly recommend you have a meal there before it closes for good on 12/31/2024. Sad to see them go...
