Proper 21, brought to DC from the New York City restaurateurs Rob Zahn and Will Strozier that own Manhattan Proper and Proper West, opened in early October 2016. Located at 1319 F Street NW, Proper 21 is a high end sports bar serving All American classics with a gourmet twist. Proper 21 is the third location of NIEUW Group Inc.

Like its predecessors, located in New York City, Proper 21 serves contemporary American cuisine. The space maintains the modern aesthetic and New York style of the Manhattan locations, which have best been described as Tom Ford meets Thomas Edison. The restaurant provides the best audio & visual for sports, corporate functions, nightlife and other events.

Proper 21 requests reservations be made 45 minutes in advance.

Did not realize it is really a sports bar when booking. So, of course it is noisy. Nice selection menu. Food was quite good. Prices appropriate to the menu. As it got busier, our waitress disappeared trying to deal with a lot of tables. Luckily someone else came along and took our dessert order. The lava cake was mediocre; the menu said berries but there were none, only a not very good berry sauce. Decent wine list although beer is probably more popular.

It was so loud we couldn’t hear each other. Our waitress was spectacular and when we said we had theater tickets she seemed to find another gear, getting our food and drinks super-fast. But the noise …. Yikes

Very loud like most DC places. But staff was very nice though very busy. And the food was good but not exceptional and a fair value for DC.

On a quiet Sunday evening with very few full tables, service was slow and unresponsive. They seated five of us at a table for four, when there were multiple 6-tops open that would have provided us more comfortable seating. Food was good, but not worth the New York prices and sub-par service.

The food is always fantastic. Always. Everyone always loves their meal, no matter what they get. But our waiter was rarely present. We ate at 630, were quick in ordering, and said we had to be at National Theater at 8. At 7:48, we were still looking all over for him, as was the next table. We ended up talking to them because they had told him the same thing, and they were just as bewildered at the service issue as we were. The service was slow, but when you disappear when you know we have a show…it was really disappointing. Sigh. It’s just a bummer because the food is so darn good.

Very welcoming atmosphere to all age groups. No one should have a problem finding something to order on their appropriately sized and priced menu. Nice and close to most attractions for walking.
