There is only one way to describe it: Classic Russia in the heart of New York.
The history of Russian Samovar starts well before the restaurant itself. Originally Jilly's Canteen, and owned by a friend of Frank Sinatra, Jilly Rizzo, Samovar was the go-to hot spot for Sinatra and The Rat Pack.
In 1986, Roman Kaplan, founder of Russian Samovar acquired the property and was joined in 1987 by friends and business partners: Legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and Nobel Award Winning poet Joseph Brodsky. Baryshnikov's baby grand piano is still used daily by our performers and guests can still request the Brodsky table, where the legends used to sit and drink away the hours. Guests of private events also enjoy our private dining room, where Baryshnikov filmed Sex in the City.
​Samovar has remained a celebrity hangout over the years. We've been lucky enough to feature impromptu shows by Liza Minelli and rumor has it that Mel Brooks adapted The Producers to film while sitting at our bar.

                                                                                                        Classic and authentic Russian cuisine. Old school NYC/russian interior, which is what we expected, and it was a great time. Food is fantastic and perfectly prepared.

                                                                                                        We often eat at the Russian Samovar after the theatre as it is open late and the food is good. This time we both started with a bowl of borscht, tasty and warming on a cold night. I had the seafood blinchiki to follow, tender morsels of scallop and shrimp in a delicate cream saffron sauce, which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately my guest's kulebyaka was not as good as usual; the salmon was rather dry, and when she tasted my entree, she wished she had chosen that. We did not order desert, but finished with glasses of tea with sour cherries. My glass of Chianti Classico was very drinkable, and my guest had a Moscow Mule. Our server was cheerful, entertaining and attentive. The vibe is lively and the noise level high - if you want to talk rather than listen to the music, ask to sit at the back. Prices have gone up considerably lately, and the borscht no longer comes with a small Pirozhok. The entertainment provides a party atmosphere. All in all, a pleasant end to the evening.

                                                                                                        Have been coming here on and off for many years (last prior was pre-covid). Always enjoyable. Love the quiet atmosphere and then there's also the piano music. Menu has changed over the years. Miss some of the old options, but not a major issue.

The restaurant had a credit card fee, food was great but I thought the price was a little high for it. I travel and expected this. Great piano entertainment. Great wait service. Near the big theaters.

                                                                                                        Excellent food - the waiter was great, but over worked! Need to hire more staff! A bit loud since we were seated next to entertainers, but they were very good! We would definitely go back!
