Located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, TAKOI is known for modern Thai cooking accented with Michigan seasonality, a DIY mentality, and a penchant for local food production. As a core pillar of our mission, TAKOI operates HiO Farm which is located just a mile north of the restaurant. During the height of farm season, the restaurant highlights dishes prepared with HiO produce utilizing the techniques and flavors inspired by Thailand and beyond.


TAKOI, originally KATOI, began as a food truck in 2014, evolved into an Ann Arbor pop-up, and landed as a proper restaurant at 2520 Michigan Avenue in March of 2016. After being open for 11 months, having a slew of fun, and garnering a handful of awards — including a James Beard 'Best New Restaurant' nomination— KATOI was brought back down to earth when it was subjected to arson in February 2017. The day after the fire, the rebuild began, and we opened as TAKOI exactly six months later in August 2017.

    Everything was sooooooo tasty. Went we my sister and mom and we shared 6 items, which was PLENTY, but everything was so tasty that we put a pretty good dent in most items. The chicken dish was AMAZING - skin was so crispy and rendered so still felt light and had a really nice seasoning. The steak came with a sauce that just really elevated it - it tasted like there was lime leaf in it which I love the distinct flavor of. The hen of the woods mushroom dish was ok - I do love mushrooms but this was the only dish that didn’t really leave a lasting flavor impression. The description of the sweet coconut cream “pan cakes” was a bit misleading, as actually they were little cups filled with coconut cream - not at all a pan cake, but still really tasty but sized vessels of cream. We would definitely recommend it - so much flavor, and nothing felt heavy.

    Wonderful service, as always. Our server was very nice, knowledgeable, and attentive. Would absolutely recommend Takoi to all!

    Everything about this place is amazing. The food was beyond good and the service was excellent. We would go back for sure! It is a must.

    Takoi is a lovely restaurant with great food and great vibes. Then menu is always tasty and fresh, and their drinks are great too. I appreciate that the menu is labeled for vegan and gluten-free items as well - super helpful and accommodating. They rotate out new items every season, so we end up trying something new almost every time we go.

    I have been a huge fan of the restaurant so far. And until today I've only had ala carte I'd recommend not going for tasting menu for a couple of reasons. Generally you' expect individual portion to be given to each person, but you are still served a single plate to share among for four people. I understand the general setup of the dishes is to be shared. But I'd expect it to be portioned individually for the tasting menu. Although the tasting menu included fan favourites from last 10 years, it would have been better to call them out to makes the if it going to be those I/we liked. I would have decided otherwise if I had known the dishes I would be served. Overall, the tasting menu fared poorly vs ala carte personally. It could be a completely different experience for others however.
