Comfort food from Kerala, India's spice garden. Thattu is located in the beautiful Chicago neighborhood of Avondale. It was born of Chef Margaret Pak’s love for the southwest Indian coastal cuisine of Kerala. Our menu brings you traditions of Kerala along with playful interpretations from our culinary team. Rich with aromatic spices, coconut and curry leaves, the cuisine is a celebration of the bounty of the land and the sea.

The food was very good, but not as kind blowing as before. Still wish it wasn’t to order by app. I prefer to have a waiter/waitress take the order. Don’t like to have phones out and just down grades the experience.

Thattu is a restaurant that delivers carefully prepared aromatic healthy food. The wait staff cannot be more engaging and informative. We loved learning about southern Indian food. It is amazing and we look forward to returning. We loved the roasted eggplant appetizer and whitefish in bannana leaves. We also had a vegtable plate that was wonderful.

A wonderful reimagining of traditional Kerala foods and flavors. Not everyone will enjoy ordering and paying via an app accessed by a QR code, but the helpful friendly servers visit frequently to explain the items and how much to order for your group. The room is inviting and serene. I’ve spent a fair amount of time in South India and can testify that every bite was a delight. This was my first time but I’ll be back soon.

Having been to Kerala & traveled from coast to interior, we were expecting food similar to what we enjoyed on our trip. ALL the dishes were quite spicy though menu only indicated a few that were. The flavors across the 5 dishes were not that distinguishable. Service was great, though. Restaurant was pretty loud.

The hostess was very welcoming and friendly. Food was delicious. The appams were light and fluffy just like the ones we enjoy in Kerala. We ordered the chicken ghee roast and black chickpea gravy. Desserts were lovely.

The Chef clearly takes pride in her cooking — the Kerala cuisine was as authentic as in Kerala India! The dishes were so well seasoned and very flavorful without being spicy. We enjoyed every single dish— the fish wrapped in banana leaf, the chicken biryani, kadala curry, stew, the appams, payasam—all superb! Our server was very helpful and nice. We had a wonderful time.

Excellent food if not a little expensive. Great flavors. Unique Indian Food. Waitstaff tremendous!!! Definitely be back there soon.
