A Traditional Derbyshire Inn
With A Five Counties View!

The Barrel Inn, a traditional Derbyshire country inn, dates back to 1597 and stands at the head of Bretton Clough, in the heart of the Peak District.

Being one of only five properties in this small hamlet, on a table of land some 1300 feet above sea level, The Barrel Inn proudly claims to be the highest pub in Derbyshire.

Its panoramic views of the majestic Hope Valley and the Peak District National Park are magnificent and on a clear day you are able to enjoy views over five counties.

The pub serves a fine selection of well kept real ales and delicious, freshly cooked, mostly locally sourced food, every day.

Old worldly charm - peaceful oak-beamed bar, real log fires, flagstone floors, studded doors in low doorways, beamed ceilings and polished copper and brass - have all been retained to enhance the overall charm and friendliness of the Inn.

Menu choices very interesting . At last meals without chips !! Food was excellent in terms of quality of produce, cooking and presentation . Service was polite , helpful , not intrusive , Our guests too were impressed and we will all be back . We did however find wine by the glass rather expensive .

Excellent position, great friendly service and quality food, prepared and presented brilliantly. You obviously expect to pay more for such service and quality.

Exceptional food, wonderful atmosphere, good service. Also, great view. It has been added to our list of favourite places to eat.

Great food, great service, lovely ambiance - highly recommended. We both shared the olives + bread to start & for main course had the venison loin cassoulet with red cabbage which was wonderful. Visit - Tuesday evening We live locally & have eaten at the Barrel on several occasions & plan to continue doing so!

Visit the Barrel Inn as often as I can. It's a 50 minute drive and well worth it. Food outstanding. Service always exceeds expectations and the views outside are just wonderful. A really fabulous pub to visit. The food is beyond delicious with a fantastic menu and service always exceptionally quick and staff a delight. I could sit outside for hours and look at the views. Extremely relaxing and a real hidden gem.

4 of us arrived for Sunday dinner. 2 of us had roast beef the other 2 had gammon. All 4 meals were fabulous, couldn't manage a dessert, maybe next time as we will definitely be back. Staff were friendly and polite. Great afternoon.

Superb Sunday lunchtime meal at the Barrell Inn. Started off with a drink outside watching the paragliders soaring on a lovely sunny day. Inside for the meal at 1pm, the table we were allocated was not ideal but the staff were very helpful in allocating us one much nicer with a window view out into the valley (and more views of the paragliders whizzing by). The food was exceptional, sosft shell crab and mackerel to start. Sunday beef roast to follow for Mrs and venison meatball bourgignon for myself. Both dishes top drawer. Finish with sticky toffee pud and apple and blackberry crumble. Not cheap but top quality with excellent friendly service and in our view well worth it. We will most definitely return.

Disappointing. We visit from Australia and until today was our favourite. It's changed and not for the best. If it's not broken, don't fix it. Bring back the old menu that everyone loved.
