Pull back the portico curtains and step into the historic downtown Newport mansion once owned by businessman Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt that has been reimagined as a glamorous social hub with a culinary secret to discover at every turn. From an intimate dining room with an intriguing menu of savory local dishes to the sun-dappled Conservatory and dining al fresco in The Garden, the dining scene at The Vanderbilt is crackling with alluring eccentricities just waiting to be explored.

Important Notes: Reservations are held for 15 minutes beyond the scheduled arrival time, and during peak service hours you may not be seated until your entire party has arrived. Once your party is assembled, we will offer you the next available table for a party of your size. Also, we do our utmost to accommodate all guest requests upon check-in, but unfortunately cannot guarantee any particular seating preferences.

The bar is beautiful with skilled mixologists. The ambiance and seating by the fireplace for our special occasion was truly memorable. All dishes were flavorful and the house wines by the glass pair well with all offerings.

The Vanderbilt is an iconic hotel in one of my favorite places, Newport RI. My husband and I have visited the restaurant several times. We love the ambiance. This last visit we brought our children to experience one of our new favorite places. We always arrive early for the 1/2 price oysters. You can’t pass up this deal. The service is wonderful, the drinks are creative and the food is very good. Be prepared to pay. The price for cocktails and meals can sting. It is definitely worth the visit if you enjoy a peek into the past.

An event ended earlier then expected so we arrived at 3:30 when reservation wasn’t until 5. Was hoping maybe to get drinks at the bar. Host and staff were so gracious and set us up right in front of the fire at a table. We had a bottle of champagne with a cheese plate and oysters until it was dinner time. Then split the royale with cheese burger (amazing) and pillowy soft gnocchi. Everybody was so welcoming and nice, especially since we were kind of crashing the dining room well before service. We had just come from a vintage photo shoot and our photographer hung out with us and a few drinks as well, of course her and my wife snapped a few more photos but everyone just rolled with it that we were some 30s weirdos just hanging out an hour and a half before our reservation. Beautiful place, amazing ambiance, great food, good drinks. We go every year for our anniversary, just usually not in costume. Looking forward to next year!

My wife and I enjoyed our lunch at the Vanderbilt. Great atmosphere, very good food, but service was underwhelming and less than expected for an Auberge property.
