The Farmers Union is a gastropub located in the heart of downtown San Jose. We boast a 60 tap draft system that features many craft beers, wine on tap, as well as root beer and cider. We brought a group of 8 here for a business dinner and unfortunately it was average at best. It was incredibly loud, to the point where we couldn't hear each other at our own table. In fairness, the table next to us was obnoxiously loud. Service was good but food was not great. 4 of us ordered beef brisket and it was so fatty none of us could eat most of ours, sides we're not very good - mac and cheese and baked beans (more like a bean soup). Others had various dishes and the one stand out was the fried chicken. With so many other options in the area, I wouldn't recommend unfortunately.

I've been to The Farmers Union a few times, and it is OK. The service is OK, the ambiance is OK, and the food is fair. Our party of 4 was there for brunch before the theater, and we thought the food was OK. Two had Farmer Breakfasts, one had Avocado Toast, one had the grilled cheese sandwich and soup. I think the Avocado Toast diner liked her meal the best. The rest of us left some food on our plates - the hash browns were not great, and the bacon was really well done. The main reason we return to The Farmers Union is because it is pretty convenient (about 4 blocks) from the SJ Center for the Performing Arts. The four meals came to around $100, so the cost is OK, too.

Strangely, when making the reservation they ask for a seating preference, and then didn't honor that. No big deal, but just really weird... should have known it was a sign. We were seated, and sat at at the table for 30 minutes without a server coming by the table, or even making eye contact. So we left - not sure they even noticed that we left. I had gone to the restaurant before for lunch, and felt that the food was mediocre and expensive. Tried to give it a second shot for dinner, and unfortunately they doubled down with terrible service. Avoid this place - there are a lot of options in the area that are happy to have customers.

We enjoy ordering from the appetizer menu and sharing the ajillo shrimp, smoked brisket tacos, and the beer cheddar fondue. Delicious. No room for dessert!

We made reservations in the 5pm hour and asked for a booth, main room table or upstairs table (there were TONS available), and we were shuffled in the back room with no ambiance, no other people, and nothing to see except a giant tv. We asked for another table and they said no. We were hosting out of town guest from Boston. Beyond disappointed and will never bring guests here again.

The cocktails were horrible, the steak and brisket had good flavor but everything else was mid at best. Definitely over priced. Our server was great but we certainly wouldn’t come back.
